There is some evidence to suggest that Placerias lived in a seasonal environment. Tusks of other dicynodonts - or "two-toothed dogs" - show wear alternating between deep grooves and a smoother polishing effect, possibly gained through having to dig through hard earth in the dry season and sliding through silty mud in the wet season. The vicious-looking tusks of Placerias were used to dig for roots when lower vegetation was scarce, as was the case over much of Pangaea, the climate being one of either intense drought or monsoonal rainfall.
